Distinguished Service Cross

Distinguished Service Cross

Quick Overview

Medal with correct slot brooch in cardboard box. It was produced by The Robbins Company, purchase order No. 14229, dated February 17, 1945. Typical for Robbins is the black brooch. The dated DSC cardboard box is so much harder to find than the black coffin case.
The Distinguished Service Cross is the second highest military award that can be given to a member of the United States Army (and previously the United States Air Force), for extreme gallantry and risk of life in actual combat with an armed enemy force. During World War II, just over 5000 awards were made. General McAuliffe of the 101st Airborne Division was one of the recipients of the DSC. It was awarded to him by General Patton on December 30, 1944 (see additional photo).
