AN 6519-1 Life preserver in box

Quick Overview

Iconic 'Mae West' Life Preserver in its box, as used by aviators and paratroopers. On February 1944 the B-4 Life preserver was replaced by model AN 6519-1, which was also use by the USN. It was identical to the B-4 apart from some minor changes. This example is complete with its original straps and rubber air hoses. It was made by Firestone R & L Prod. Co. The contract N288S-23495 was awarded in June 1944 and entailed 45.000 units.
The life preserver has the date stamp of February 2, 1945, which is also on the box. The box also has the text 'if in storage after February 2, 1946 the pneumatic life vest shalll be tested and inspected before issue'. This covered a period of one year after the life preserver was made.
The vest has the factory installed modifications of an additional collar strap (T.O. 13-1-17 of May 1944) and shortened cords at the CO2 cartridge holders (T.O. 177-44 of September 1944). There are no additional inspection stamps (T.O. 13-1-3 of December 1943) as the vest was never issued. The rubber is very supple and the yellow color is strong and vibrant. The box has some tape repairs but it kept the life preserver in such great shape. You'll be hardpressed to find a nice AN 6519-1 life preserver vest.
